| Tata Indicom WiMax Up and Running in Bangalore |
|
Wi-Fi hasn't lived to the hype that it generated in India with literally no operational citywide networks. However, WiMax is seeing increased adoption. After Reliance, Tata Communications [VSNL] has launched Indicom broadband powered by WiMax technology in Bangalore.
We all know that VSNL is the pioneer of Internet in India yet it faced serious setbacks lately, due to poor over head cable connections, etc. [Getting to the bottom of the problem, we found out VSNL Cable Internet was in association with local Cable guys. Due to competition amongst Cable guys, muscle power and unethical practices including cable cuts were common] With Tata brand name under pressure, they decided to go broadband with WiMax technology. Unlike Reliance which launched in a hurry, Tata Communications seem to have tested for atleast 60 days here in Bangalore.
Tata Communications Wimax broadband should be available in any corner of Bangalore because they have kicked off with 140 WiMax Towers, a terrific number. Did you know that the service provider installs a WiMax antenna costing approximately Rs 10,000 for FREE and takes it back if you discontinue the service. So this implies no more breaking head with city corporations for right of way to lay cables as BSNl has setup its DSL backed broadband network.
The rates are competitive and are comparable to Airtel Broadband. The only thing we now need to see is the performance :-) |

I got the connection a week back, and guess what, I have been calling call center everyday from that day. Yes the speed is good, but frequent disconnections, bad service centers, with little feedback, It's like we are at the mercy of the signals, like waiting for wind in the old days to move on high seas. The only good thing is atleast they don't cash the check until we get the connection.

The WiMax connection from Tata Indicom does not work properly and their customer support is really pathetic. While they claim to attend to the problem within 24 hours, they are not able to fix the problem even after several days in my case. One needs to think twice before going in for this connection.
-
I agree, Tata Indicom Wi Max service is crap. The people do not bother whether you have applied the connection, they don't bother how long you have waited. They don't bother to contact you, they don't bother to update you.
I hv been waiting since 24th of Dec,07 and am still waiting to surf the internet. They came on 12 Jan to do the connection, but after that no updates. We have been calling them endlessly and they just have one answer " Which is that Work is in Progress". I fail to understand if actually they are looking into the problem or not.
My suggestion is that don't go for Tata Indicom WiMax until and unless their service improves.
-
Hello All. So far I have seen not so good feedbacks to Tata indicom WiMax broadband connection. But I am happy with it. I did not face any issues with it. The only thing as everybody says that you will not get updates from customer support. Within 15day after I supplied the application for WiMax they came and installed and made it up and running.
One bad part is that once they came and tried but failed to get connection becasue there was no signal at my place. The reson was that near our area the tower was not up. But after 5 days they came and installed and it working good and even I am very happy with the speed.
But one problem what I am facing is that after changing to WiMax broadband my Skype call is disconnecting every minute which I am very afraid.
-
Hello all, thanks for your comments.
I too have the problem with Skype disconnecting, but as I have observed it has nothing to do with skype. U will face the same problem on any voice messenger. The problem is signal fluctuation/ low signal. U will not observe this when browsing as u don't need constant connection but while talking or downloading u can find the problem.
I called Umpteen times to the call centre and they run the same drill. 1)sorry for the inconvenience sir 2)I'll forward this immediately to the concerned department 3)when u call next time....sir I'll escalate this issue 4)sir our records show the work is in progress 5)one day without asking you the close the complaint, just becoz u r able to browse.
If u try directly the technical department they ask u to call call centre.
finally after making some 20 calls some guy ends up at ur door, empty handed. He finds the problem of low signal but says that it can be fixed only by the guy who sold the equipment(vendor). He says he'll send them and leaves u with no solution.
then u make some 10 more calls
and the saga continues.....will keep u posted.
regards, Sunil Kumar Yasa
p.s please join Orkut community for TATA Vsnl wimax customers.I think we're gonna need it.

Tata Wimax service in Bangalore is bullshit.. there are lot of problems.. frequent discunnection, the uplink not work at all.. so you cannot send a mail, upload anything to internet.
their customer care is pathetic, even we log a complaint, without resoving the issue they will close the complaint.
logging the complanit itself will cost you a lot, tey'll put you in hold for a long time, since they dont have any toll free number, like reliance. so one must have a tata phone also to reduce the cost to contat customer care.
as the initial offer they are giving an additional 3 months validity, but this never was the case, my connection is almost one month old.. still the validity is only for 3 months, when contacted they keep on saying excuses, and said have to wait till the 3 validity to be over to get the bonus 3 months validity added.. I'm not sure I'll really get this BONUS...
last but not the least, I lost lot of money by calling them for installation, customer care, and following them up... :( may more than the installation charge.

I am LKPRABHAKAR. Hello Sunil Reddy, you said that there is TATA Vsnl wimax customers community in orkut. I tried could not locate. Please let me know if it is available. my id is lkprabhakar@gmail.com. From past 24Hrs my internet is down I am started calling customer care as a same story they say withing 24hrs technical person will contact. This is really crazy that even if the net is down, they take 24hrs to attend or respond. If we have to send urgent emails then it is waste of time to call customer care. And if the net goes down so frequently then there is not of much use in having this wimax!!!

HI, I am planning to take a connection with tata for my office as well as to my home, now after reading the comments i am in dilema, what to choose, at the same time i was using reliance all these days and surprise is i took 2 connection in my company name and only one is installed and other one is never installed but still i get bills for both, logged a complaint with reliance and they told it will be resolved and no action taken so far, so now i decide to move to tata, can any tell me how the connection works
-
Hello, If anyone is planing to take Tata Indicom Wimax, please be prepared to face initial problems like all reported. But I feel since this is the bigining we may face lot of issues. Going forward I hope things will get settled and will be stable. But if you are skype users then do expect call frequent call drops. Skype technical person asnwered to my issues as "The Wimax may not have enough stability to keep the Skype connection. We apologize for the inconveniece." So be prepared.
-
I took Tata Wimax connectoin in Shanthi Nagar area in Bangalore. I went for this as I was not having servicec from any other wired line provider except for BSNL as they mentioned that I need to wait for a month due to waitlist.
But the main problem I am facing is most of the times in the evenings/nights broad band connection from Tata Indicom won't work. I guess some problem with the network I guess. I called up customer care but after a long wait on the call some useless info. I need to get it cleared. I keep posted if they are any updates.

I was among first few in bangalore to get Tata indicom Wimax connection, I am a post paid customer with Fixed IP. I was told that if you take this there are no chances of disconnection, but it proved wrong. Very bad call center every time call is being transfered to WIMAX team takes min 20 minutes with no resolution. And yes Skype/ Yahoo voice chat all gets dropped after every 2 minutes. I have paid in advance for 4 months, i am not sure if i will continue after that. I am sure Reliance Wimax people must be getting sadistic pleasure reading this. :( Neeraj

Is there any provision in IT or consumer law that Services like these should be certified by govt. before they approach consumers? Tata Wimax should compensate all its consumers.- Neeraj
-
Guys never expect a good customer service from TATA!!! i was using TATA Broadband, which was the Waste service!!! now got RELIANCE WIMAX which is giving a better service/speed in Bangalore/Airport Rd Area. and they give 150kbps unlimited just for 75o/= month. KEEP IT UP RELIANCE! 300 times better than TATA service.

Hi This is Rafi,
Summary: Tata Indicom Wimax is CRAP and their customer support is WORSE.
I applied for and got the connection within a week in KR Puram, Bangalore. I could browse the same night. The speed was upto 30 kbps for downloads.
Unfortunately, I am not able to connect from the next day onwards.
I have been calling their Customer Service, who make me wait endlessly, do not give any concrete answer.
After about 48 hrs, one guy visited my house, checked the settings, which were all fine. He started blaming the people who installed the receiver.
After that another 48 hrs have elapsed, I have called them about 4-6 times but nothing has happened as yet.
-
Looks like they have adopted the same model to implement last mile for WiMax as they did for Wired connection - OUTSOURCE. Last mile for DSL was outsourced to the local Cable TV Operaters and Wimax according to Sunil Reddy's post is "the guy who sold the equipment(vendor)". With the last mile being taken care by third party, there's not much one can expect. I've had a harrowing experience with a 4-month Tata Indicom DSL package I had purchased last June. If TIB would be the only ISP in my area, I would prefer relocating rather than using their connection. For me, it's Tata-Bye-Bye to TATA Indicom for ever. - Ashi, Bangalore

I got a tata indicom wimax connection installed last week and it has been working like a charm. My package is 256 infinity and all the speed tests show a download speed of 240+ though the upload is slower more in the 150 range. Below are some of the parameters which they promised and met Inquiry call to feasibility report: Promised 72 hours: completed 24 hours Application submission: 24 hours within the feasibility report Wimax Installation : Promised 15 days: Actual 8 days (5 working days) I have got a good response from their support center clarifying all my queries and also got calls from them inquiring about quality of installation etc. Overall a good experience till now. I have seen a lot of connectivity breaks being reported by people in the forum and my guess most of them are because of a weak signal. I would suggest people to follow the following procedures while installing to avoid such issues 1. Ensure that the engineer who comes for installation checks for signal strength for all the possible towers near your area. I guess they have some sort of tracker to indicate the direction of the closest tower. Also since wimax is directional (unlike a mobile tower) even the orientation is important. 2. Ensure that the antenna is installed as high as possible and pointing to a direction where there are minimum obstructions (mostly buildings). 3. This is the most important step. Check the signal strength of your connection. Ask your engineer to show you how to to do that. Pretty easy to do just telnet 192.168.1.1 (login with a default login pass which your engineer will know). And do a "sh bs". This show you the signal strength which should be 20+ for good connectivity. Though your engineer might say 16+ is good ensure its 20+. Mine is 28 and I have downloaded 4GB+ in a week with no connectivity issues.
Though I don't favor their outsourcing of the last mile connectivity which is where the quality lacks but a little effort from our side will definitely help because the backbone is solid.
Hope this helps. Just that you guys don't assume I am tata indicom guy my tata indicom id is animeshb445 If you need any more help you can drop me a email at animeshb[at]gmail.com .
happy browsing bye Animesh

I got a query regarding a connectivity issue from a blogger which I have tried to solve. I am posting it here
Though I am not a wimax expert I will try to solve your problem to the best to my capabilities. Lets analyze your problem
1. You were able to work with the initial installation for a week without any problems=> Which indicates that the installation was correct and the signal to noise ratio was good with the base station to which your antenna was aligned. Causes for this issue * The base station is offline or the frequency is conflicting with another tower/service provider. This is the most likely cause. Remedy: You might want to change your base station. I will explain more about this later. * The alignment of your antenna has changed. Look if your antenna is swinging with the wind or if its on a GI pipe, if the pipe has turned. Remedy: If so you might consider moving the antenna yourself to some direction and check the signal strength while doing this. Although its a trial and error method but might work till you get professional help. * Any new object in the line of sight of your antenna. Sign boards etc...though unlikely Remedy:Change your base station.
2. Adding more base stations to the modem does not help Wimax is a directional wireless communication unlike a mobile station which is omnidirectional. This means that your antenna and the base station have to be aligned for your connection to work with the specified base station. VSNL has 140+ base stations for wimax so I am sure you might be having more than one base station in your area. You can either wait for the service personnel to visit and change your base station or if you are enterprising enough you can try the following * Look at your installation form which will specify the GPS coordinates for your antenna * Call the customer care and see if you can get the coordinates for all the towers in your area. If they are not willing to tell atleast get the location of the towers and get the approximate coordinates from wikimapia. * Calculate the approximate angles for the various base stations around your house. * Look for the base station with the highest line of sight and put only that base station in the modem setup. * Remove your antenna and point approximately to the base station and check for the signal strength. If you have a roof try walking to various points on your roof maintaining the angle and checking the strength. * If you are not getting a 20+ strength try a different station. * Fix the antenna at the point where you get the maximum signal strength and see if things work.
Although the above process has to be done exhaustively by the person who installs the antenna he might not have done it correctly which is why you will have to be extra careful during installation. That extra effort will save you a lot of effort later on.
Disclaimer: Although you are not advised to handle the equipment by yourself but minor adjustments are unlikely to damage the instrument. In any case if you manage to damage it don't blame me :-)

am also getting this trouble, so bored abt diz everyday am talking to tataindicom people.
finally i sent a mail to mumbai appellate.authority@tatacommunications.com
that is:
::No body respond to my frequent disconnection problem during 1 month time::
I made several complaints regarding frequent disconnection of internet service (WI-MAX) more than one month. I made the complaints to your customer care, Nodel officers and Technical officials of your company. All of your officials commented as "Sir, this is the back end issue, i will talk to back end people and get back to you" forever and I understood the customer service of your company is so worst and it make me so bored on your untrustworthy service.
As your advertisements and media comments tries your company to show that you are offering a great service. But i feel the technical officers who came to my home regarding this issue are so lack in knowledge and I witnessed that they are not having the right knowledge as an IT Student I have. Further, I'm wondering you are the one of TATA group following your leader Ratan Tata doesn't know to respond a simple problem of a client. i think that you people decrease the image of your TATAs as well as taking more than one month exposes the inefficiency and ineffective service of you all!
I hope to receive the immediate solution within 48 hours regarding my problem. Otherwise, I'll be pulled to go ahead with legal actions through Indian Consumer Court. Please concern the customer satisfaction more than earning so much of money and other issues.
Hope you will give solution within 48hours.
Thank you!
Reply for this mail:: Your complaint has been forwarded to the concerned official for necessary action. tks rgds.
Appellate Authority.

Hi Guys,
A reader who had been having problems of frequent disconnection got it resolved. Thanks Bala for sharing it with us. Bala says "just now the support team from TATA communications arrived and they reoriented the antenna in similar with one more antenna which has been recently installed for one of my colleague who recently got connection after seeing my connection. Once they reorient the antenna now the signal is coming properly and is above 23"

hi ppl, I got my wimax connectivity about 15 days ago. From horrible initially to fairly stable now, my connectivity has come a long way. Since this is a new technology, glitches are to be expected and I am sure the service levels would go up over the days.
My main grouse is that I was not told that only postpaid users will get a static IP. I am a prepaid user and I am having a dynamic IP allotted by the DHCP server everytime.
Can anyone tell me how to enable port forwarding for better P2P access as I dont have a fixed IP to start with ? thanks
-
I m Ravindra from BTM Layout, Banglore working in ORACLE . I have taken TATA WIMAX WITH STATIC IP on feb08 and from the day one i m suffering a lots... this all TATA GUYS ARE BIG BULLSHITS!!!.. they dont care about cutosmers... dont go for TATA WIMAX its worst ... spelically ALL TECHINICAL PERSONS DONT KNOW ANY THINGS and just try to making us fool... really i fed with TATA WIMAX .. i dont know they will refund my money or not ...
-
Can any one explain voip works in Tata Indicom Wimax and should be any configuration can be done in the backend as the i am able to browse signal is good not able to connect voip
-
LOOKING FOR A BROADBAND CONNECTION BUT TIRED OF HEARING THE WORD NOT FEASIBLE!!!!! HERE COMES THE SOLUTION contact:- 9342038366
-
what if the equipment get stolen which is placed on the top of the building i.e. antenna which is costing around 10k, does they charge us to repay that much ammount????!!!!
-
i have read all the cpmments which is posted on this form...
the wimax is a new technology in INDIA and the frequancy which Goverment supplied to providers are high Megz... So if the Frequancy si high it will not travel inside the building and it will not overcome the obstrections.
And still all providers & vendors are on R&D stage to make Wi-MAX stable.
At initial stage all providers having the problem with Wi-MAX (TATA , reliance.Etc Etc) now i think its better than the initial Stage.
All problems wil sort out very soon
-
hey tata-wimax folks I have been using this for 1 month, most of the days I have problem getting connected. Some worthless souls sit in the customer care.. They have a really crap system for managing even the customer calls, once I dialed up CC and waited listening to their crap sound(they call it music) for more than 10min., when someone picked a call i asked them how long do you make customer to wait w/o before someone picks the call? he answered "the usual time is less than 2min", i asked him, how long was i waiting.. ; he said.. "don't know..!, surely less than 2min" then how do those idiots make sure, they are picking up calls before 2mins.
This guys then, seemed very ethusiatic to solve problem, he asked me to login the modem interface and check the bandwidth/frequency and all such bull....t and finally contacted all others around him.. (holding my call and speaking with network guys.. etc..) finally ended up saying its a BASE STATION problem and they will rectify in 4hours. They never responded back, it went on some times I got connected sometimes I don't.. Mostly 85% I wouldn't get connected. And this continues.. for days.. today is 7th day!! Really worst customer care in terms of taking responsibility about an issue. I WOULD NEVER recommend someone to use TATA WIMAX in bangalore atleast at this time, may be wait for somemore time and the technology might improve, if not the customer care.. !!
thanks,Jyo thanks,
-
Hi I am Kuamr Saurav, i would like to recommend all the reader to not to go for TATA indicom wimax connection becoz they r just pathetic. every hour u will get disconnection and they have really idiot & illiterate customer care executive also. Thats y they charge for three months subscription fee at a time at the time of taking connection. all the money has gone waste. I think tata wimax is no.1 in providing worst service in the world.
-
Horrible Customer service from Tata broadband, horrible promises. No promises kept. Switch to any other
-
I wish I never got this stupid connection! It disconnects every 2-3 mins and reconnects on its own. I checked the signals and it drops even to 0 on all 4 base stations that they have setup. The onsite tech says its also due to VISTA OS as Tata is NOT compatible with Vista, I dont understand that part, but I guess whatever they say.. I dont know. Now they want to also put a pole to put it on a higher altitude. I wish atleast that works. But the Customer Service and Tech Service was pathetic, I was calling like almost every day for 3-4 days to get the technician sent. They say the tech called me and I was not reachable, where as I dont see any missed calls on my cellphone. The techs are NOT technically very savvy either I realise. But still, only option I have is to cross my fingers or just put up with their horrible service as there is not another service provider in my area and I dont think I want to change location for the internet...
-
My experience with TATA INDICOM is very good so far. I have applied for a connection (HSR Layout 1st Sector) and I got the installation done the very next day. Even I was hesitant about the connection and response from blogs. But the connection is very good (Infinity 512). The problem what I see is the technology here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX).
If there is a proper through-put you will not have any connectivity issues. Luckily, I have a so called tower very near to my residence and hence I must not face any connectivity problems in future. Please check with the provider about the tower from your place of installation and go for a connection. You will be a happy customer if you have the tower within 2kms radial range :)

I already have a bsnl 2mbps connection but was planning to take another stable broadband connection as backup because it's very critical i have a 'Always ON' or more of a active working connection because of my critical business needs, bsnl is fairly good. does not stop working so very often but i have undergone losses when it did. so my IT at work suggested i buy a motherboard with 2 network ports(so he bought me some XFX 680i motherboard which alone cost me about 11k + another 40k for the rest of the main computer). I considered TATA WiFi for this because they promised me tht it's completely wireless & would have no issues whatsoever like bsnl wired adsl connection, falling for that i also filled up the application & gave them a check today. but after reading all of these i'm stopping the payment. But can someone suggest an alternative stable internet solution for me please. i'm ready to spend what it takes to get a good connection for both office & home use. my email address is madhusudhan[at]mail2web.com.

Hi, The WiMax connection from Tata Indicom does not work properly (I would even like to day that it is not at all working) and their customer support is really pathetic.
I suggest no body else should subscribe for it. Especially customer care unit can be given a word's worst service award and actual service also deserves similar awards.
I am just trying to find who is the head of the operations of this, to shoot mail regarding my concerns, please let me know if you have the same.
-
TataIndicom is bullshit! I had its connection few months back.. in all 6 months, it worked only 3 months.. and remaining 3 months just disconnection!!!
spent lot of money calling ther customer care and sent numerous emails...
now actually i thought of taking WiMax, and hey thank you all guys letting all know that, even TataIndicom WiMax is CRAP!!!
hope Ratan TATA see this blog!

Very bad service in Indirapuram,Ghaziabad area by the service provider. They have not been able to install properly as still could not provide me with static IP.When you call them, they say that get all the info. about installation of IP from customer care, which is not approachable for 1/2 hour or so.They have given me a wired connection whereas I was promised a wireless connection. When the team from TATA Indicom came to this area to check the performance of the local provider, they made me wait for 2 hours and then did not even let me meet the team as they would be exposed then. Very bad name to TATA by these unprofessional providers. I hope the NODAL OFFICER is listening.

I have also been facing similar problems with Tata Indicom. Internet connection worked on Day 1 and has been down ever since, Its been 10 days and no response from anyone in Tata Indicom. Maybe a good idea would be to inform some newspaper of this bad service just to jolt them out of their laziness. Mine is a prepaid connection and after providing me with just 1 day of connection , they refuse to refund my money as well... Bunch of cheats.. Tata Indicom
