Reliance Communications announces quarterly results

Finally, the Anil Ambani controlled Reliance Infocomm thought it was time to declare results and bring some transperency. Blame it on the Indian government’s telecom policy or Ambani’s inherited busienss practice, it is still not very clear who holds how much in Reliance Infocomm with so many subsidiaries and cross holdings.

Anyway, lets take a closer look at the results. Results ? Where are they ??? Just this piece of release at the time this blog was written. I was really bent upon studying the numbers like Bharti-Airtel discloses(Indian GAAP and breakup of business segments) but I am disappointed. E-mails sent to ADA’s office were treated as though bloggers are like untouchables and the office thinks only newspapers as relevant media.

Reliance Communications had a revenue of Rs3250 crores and a net profit of Rs513 crores(No breakup given) for Q1 ending June-30 2006.. While Bharti-Airtel had revenues of Rs3856 crores and a net profit of Rs755 crores for the same period. Anyway, I personally recommend to avoid Reliance Communications until they really understand what corporate governance is or maybe they can hire services of N.R.Naryan Murthy :)

Idea cellular to invest 2500 crores to expand to other circles.

Idea Cellular is planning all India footprint. Idea plans to apply for licenses in the remaining 12 circles, which are Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkatta amongst the Metros. Karnataka and Tamilnadu in Circle A. Punjab & West Bengal in Circle B. Bihar, Orissa, Assam, North East India and Jammu and Kashmir in Circle C. Idea is considering investing Rs2500 crores for these 12 circles through its holding company Aditya Birla Nuvo. This means we will have 5 telcos - Bharti-Airtel, Reliance, BSNL, Hutch and Idea operating all over India. As on today, Hutch and Idea appear to be the weaker telcos to offer complete bouquet consisting of mobile, landline, internet and triple play services. Sanjeev Aga MD of Aditya Birla Nuvo said,

We are hopeful of getting licences in all circles and would start operations depending on the receipt of the approvals.

We will invest over Rs 2,500 crore to strengthen our existing network and extend our presence to new circles. We will invest in brand promotion to increase our visibility. More promotional activities will be seen in national TV and print, other than regional media houses.


I had thought of consolidation in the Indian Mobile space with smaller operators who held less than 2 or 3 circles to sell out to others. Sure they sold, but to foreign entities. Sivsankran sold Aircel to Maxis and Spice sold 49% to Telekom Malaysia. Aircel has also applied for 8 more licenses in India.

Hutch lanuches Visual Radio - Improve your voice quality first, then Video

Hutch along with Radio Mirchi - India’s leading FM Radio provider, HP and Nokia has launched Visual Radio service in India. What is Visual Radio anyway ? It lets the user receive the local FM broadcast on his cell phone along with video being fed into it for users viewing pleasure. Hutch is the first operator to offer such a service in India.

It will be interesting to see the Quality of Service because Hutch cell phone users are so frustrated with their poor network infrastructure(Hutch works only indoors and the agents directly ask to have more connections in the locality if user needs an antenna which will act as a signal booster) atleast in Bangalore and Karnataka which is also evident by the poor addition of subscribers in the past quarter.

Bharti-Airtel profits rise 48 percent

Bharti-Airtel which recently crossed 25 million subscribers mark has reported outstanding quarterly profits for the quarter ending June-30th. Quarterly sales were up 53 percent compared to a year ago at Rs3860 crores and profits up 48 percent at Rs755 crores. Bharti also beat analysts expectations of 9% QoQ growth to achieve 13%. This was expected because of the strong addtions in subscribers.


I will defer to analyze the results until we get Reliance Communications’ results on July-31st.

Reliance-Qualcomm roylaty issue deadlocked.

Reliance with support from IT minister Mr Maran is still insisting on lower royalties while the recently concluded board meeting of Qualcomm at San Deigo has affirmed that their will be no cut in royalties. The company release said that,
Qualcomm is committed to help the industry drive handset prices down and it involves multiple players and has nothing to do with negotiations on royalties with operators as they do not pay it.
So are Reliance ADAG officials now busy weighing options to rollover to GSM to deploy 3G ? Meanwhile, their is a good news that Reliance Communications will declare its quarterly results on July 31st.

15 years of IT & Telecommunications reforms in India

The day was July 24th, 1991, Dr.Manmohan Singh (current PM) then finance minister of India, read out his budget speech, opening the gates to foreign investors and liberalizing economic policies. Some of the major milestones achieved in the field of IT & Telecommunications are,

  • 1991 - Private TV Channel gets the nod. Telephone subscriber base is at 4 Million.
  • 1992 - ZEE TV is the first private channel operator in India. 0.41 Million homes with Cable TVs
  • 1994 - Bids invited by Govt from private telecom operators to provide mobile services.
  • 1995 - Government formulates Cable TV networks regulation act.
  • 1996 - Private companies get into FM radio
  • 1997 - TRAI comes into existence. Total TV homes in India reaches 60 Million
  • 2001 - Government allows DTH. Permites 20% FDI in Telecom and 22 private FM stations launched. PC prices crash.
  • 2002 - Mobile subscriber base is at 13 Million. Bandwidth prices are reduced by 25%.
  • 2003 - Government issues DTH licenses and tables comprehensive Broadband and Convergence bill.
  • 2004 - Zee becomes the first DTH services provider in India. Mobile phone subscribes base at 2.6 million.
  • 2005 - Government clears FM Radio expansion. CDMA mobile service providers begin operations. Total mobile subscriber base around 80 Million
  • 2006 - VoIP is legalized.Indian media and entertainment industry values at Rs35,300 crores($7.6 Billion). 65 Million cable and satellite TV homes. 110 Million TV homes. 8 Million DTH subscribers. FM radio licenses cross 300 mark. Mobile subscriber base at record level of 105 Million. ILD/ISD charges have come down to round Rs3.0/Minute via calling card. Diya Mirza launches Samsung’s world’s slimmest phone in India


Diya Mirza probably reminds you of Miss Asia 2000 :-) She is the brand ambassador for Samsung in India and today launched Samsung’s slimmest mobile phone - Ultra 6.9. The phone is just 6.9mm thick and has 2 MegaPixel camera, MP3 player, Direct TV out interface, 80MB memory and weighs just 66gms - all in line with Miss Asia’s expectations ;-)

The handset is priced at Rs16,000.

Govt crackdown on Illegal VoIP calls.

Even though net telephony is legal in India from Jan-2006, their is still lot of il-legal termination of these calls on PSTN circuits /landphones without proper agreement and royalties. In a letter to the DoT, the Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) said:

Internet telephony services can be offered in India either by an ISP specifically permitted to do so or by a unified access service licensee. However, several service providers such as Skype, Net2Phone, Yahoo, and MSN, are providing Internet telephony services to people in India. Most of these foreign service providers do offer termination in Indian fixed-line telephones as well.

Also, such service offering is resulting in loss of revenue to the Government by way of licence fee as well as by way of service tax.

As usual, our Government is too slow to act and its policies way too old for the fast changing world of technology. Ultimate loser is the consumer.

Triple Play in India - Hype & Hurdles

Triple Play - Phone, Internet and TV(Cable, IPTV, DishTV) is the new buzzword amongst Indian telcos. BSNL and Bharti - Airtel are planning to introduce IPTV while Tatas has joined hands with Star TV to offer Tata-Sky DTH(Dish) service. Reliance Communications has announced mega plans through its subsidiary, Reliance BlueMagic but its still not yet clear if they want to provide either Dish or IPTV or both. DishTV which earlier obtained an order from TDSAT has now moved to the Supreme Court over Star TVs high pricing. Reminds me of the ugly cable wars of late 90s.

BSNL which started its piolt project in Pune is now expanding it to other parts of the country. It makes sense for BSNL to take the IPTV route via ADSL broadband because of the abundant copper cable network it has to reach the end customer. BSNL added 10 more exchanges to the existing 8 so that they have a central office every 4 Kms radius. However, Bharti-Airtel has very thin penetration of its broadband as well as land phones. Here is the questionnaire I have sent to Bharti-Airtel.

Looks like Triple play is doing extremely well in Asia while telecom executives are skeptical about it brining any revenues in the US. In a separate development, Tech Mahindra announced their plans to offer IPTV solutions to Indian service providers.

Reliance drops ISD call rates on calling cards, can’t compete with Bharti-Airtel

It took almost few months for Reliance Infocomm to introduce international calling cards. ISD rates on calling cards are upto half the normal rates. For instance, Bharti-Airtel offers VCC - Virtual Calling Card and the rates can be as low as Rs3.50/Minute to US/Canada/Malaysia/Hong Kong/Singapore Mobile & Land Phone on a calling card of Rs500 denomination. A same call would cost Rs3.99 & Rs3.75 on a lower card denomination of Rs100 and Rs200 respectively. However, for Europe, Australia and New Zeland the rates are Rs3.50 and Rs8.95 for Land Phone and Mobile respectively. Unfortunately, it is till expensive to call the Middle East and SAARC nations - flat rate of rs8.95/Minute ir-respective of the calling card.

Reliance Communications woke up today to offer reduced rates. A call to US, Canada and South East Asia would now cost Rs 4.50 a minute on purchasing a global calling card of denomination Rs 575 at least which has a talktime of Rs 512 and is valid for 90 days. While the same call would cost Rs6.0 on global cards of lower denominations such as Rs 115 and Rs 225. Similarly, calls to landlines and mobile phones in the UK, would cost Rs six and eight respectively for all denominations of global calling cards. A call to Europe, Australia and New Zealand would cost between Rs 6 and Rs 6.50 depending upon the denomination of the calling card. For a call to the Gulf countries, the tariffs are Rs eight per minute for high end calling cards while Rs 8.50 for lower denomination cards.

Blogs are being blocked ?

On the directions of the government of India, Indian ISPs have started censoring and blocking web properties. This was first noticed by Indian bloggers and upon inquiring with their respective ISPs, the actions are confirmed. Unfortunately, Blogspot and TypePad are the targets till now.”

There’s an ongoing discussion of the censorship on GoogleGroups.

Kindly respect and uphold the actions of Government of India as we are all safe in the hands of an able Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. Lets wait for an official press release from the Government.

Weekend Telecom Updates

FIPB has finally cleared the indirect holding of Orascom in Hutchinson Whampoa. Orascom after the FIPB clearance now controls 10% in Hutch India. Orascom controls around 60% of Pakistan cell phone market. This clearance couldn't have come at a better time especially when our Prime Minister has declared Pakistani hands in 7/11 Mumbai blasts. Orascom though is an Egyptian company, has strong interests in Pakistan and Bangladesh cell phone markets. I strongly recommend FIPB, TRAI and TDSAT together investigate the interests of Orascom in Hutchinson India as Hutch has a history of shady deals and illegal practices.

Ahead of Qualcomm’s July-19th board meeting to decide on the handset roylaty issue for Indian cellcos, HFCL, a CDMA operator has announced that it has applied for GSM spectrum for the Punjab circle.

Bharti-Airtel which had announced the launch of it’s fixed wireless phone(FWP), Airtel Mega, today announced of its availability in Kerala.

Airtel introduces broadband gaming with IndiaGames

Airtel Broadband has tied up with IndiaGames to offer games as a subscription service to its broadband customers in India. Customer will have access to IndiaGames at a rate of Rs199/Month. IndiaGames also has a huge collection of mobile games.

Indian gaming market is expected to touch Rs250 crores this year.

Indian Mobile subscribers grow by 17.8% QoQ

Is India the fastest growing mobile subscribers market in the world ? The total number of cellular subscribers base at the end of Q2-2006 is 105,279,394 compared to 89,346,559 a quarter ago. GSM operators still control more than 60% of the market. Bharti-Airtel is India’s number one mobile service provider with a market share of 21.9% followed closely by Reliance Communications Ventures(includes Reliance Infocomm(CDMA provider) & Reliance Telecom(GSM provider)) at 21.25%. Reliance needs to be transperent in its operations by declaring quarterly results of the company. (Send me if you have them. Several requests to the company has yielded no results).

Indian GSM Mobile subscribers grow by 13.6% QoQ

Indian GSM cellular operators grew by just 13.6% QoQ at the end of Q2-2006(June 30th) compared to CDMA subscribers growth of 32% during the same period. You cannot compare QoQ growth directly as GSM operators have 3 times the subscribers base than that of CDMA.

At the end of Q2-2006, total Indian GSM subscriber base stands at 78,484,849(June 30th 2006) compared to 69,064,945 (March 31st 2006) a quarter ago. Bharti-Airtel now leads the pack of GSM operators with a market-share of 29.4% and 23,072,579 subscribers. BSNL Cell One occupied the second slot with a market share of 23.3% and 18,293,682 subscribers. Hutch occupies third slot with 15.27% market share and 11,991,953 subscribers followed by Idea Cellular with 10.87% marketshare and 8,535,443 subscribers.

Indian CDMA Mobile subscribers grow by 32% QoQ

The CDMA standard mobile subscriber base in India at the end of Q2-2006(June30th) stands at 26,794,545. Their are only two major operators based on this technology - Reliance Infocomm and Tata Indicom.

Reliance Infocomm now has 20,205,558 mobile subscribers compared to 15,407,211 at the end of Q1-2006(March-31st) reperesenting a QoQ growth of 31%. Reliance Infocomm now has a market share of 75.5% on CDMA technology only. Tata Indicom now has a subscriber base of 6,588,987 compared to 4,851,532 a quarter ago, representing a QoQ growth of 35.8%. Tata Indicom now has a market share of 24.5% on CDMA network only.

Overall the Metros witnessed slower growth compared to Category “A” circles (Mahrashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu). Combined subscriber base at the end of Q2-2006 in Metros is 7,137,676 while in Category “A” circles is 9,244,816. Recently, Reliance Communications, the parent company for Reliance Infocomm has threatned to migrate to GSM if Qualcomm fails to oblige to its requests. However, this may not happen in the next few quarters and it will continue to add subscribers in Reliance Infocomm.

BSNL & MTNL oppose to opneing their pipes

BSNL & MTNL which together have 90% of India’s wirelines(landline) subscribers are opposed to opening their pipes to be accessed by private operators to provide broadband services. Broadband in India is termed as any “always-on” internet connection offering a speed of 256KBPs or more.

BSNL & MTNL together have 40 million(4 crores) wireline subscribers. TRAI had earlier recommended that BSNL and MTNL open their pipes to private operators because most of the recent growth in telecom has been in the wireless segment. BSNL & MTNL are of the opinion that private operators lay down their own pipe, which has been a very slow process till now. Private operators like Reliance which have more than 40,000Km fibre optic network connecting every remote village is unable to use it and most of Reliance Infocomms bandwidth is dark fibre. BSNL and MTNL provide their own broadband services - DataOne Broadband and Triband Broadband respectively.

AnyUser Telecom, has slashed ISD rates to USA, UK and Canada. The calls will now cost Rs 1.15 per minute and these rates are all-inclusive and do not carry additional charges, with the exception of applicable service tax. Check out their website for more details on their calling cards.

Weekend - Telecom Updates

In a major relief to Telecom service providers, the TDSAT ruled in favor of services providers by clearly stating that only revenues from Telecom services should be included in the gross revenue of the company for calculating fees to be paid to the government.

Bharti-Airtel known to the world for innovative business practices is now planning to implement the concepts of Supply Chain Management, adopted by manufacturing companies to bring down and streamline its expenditure. ET has more details.

m-Entertainment and m-Commerce in India

Earlier I had reported about the popularity of Mobile Music downloads in India. Telcom experts are predicting that the Indian m-Entertainment market to be $5 Billion by 2009 in India. DoT’s Arun Kumar Saxena said that Mobile TV has a very huge demand in rural India. It is for this reason that we need to resolve the 3G rollout differences between various operators and the Government.
Mr Singh of Qualcomm added that

Contextual applications would become the next big thing in VAS, where advertisers could project their message in an entertainment video at the right moment to gain maximum impact on the consumer.

Google has their mobile labs working 24/7 to target the Indian market.

m-CommerceIndia:
Earlier their were rumors about Tata’s developing a mobile payment system, IndiPay. It is now time for Coruscant, developer of PayMate and other m-Commerce technologies to raise $5 Million from Silicon Valley VCs Sherpalo Ventures and Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers.

9 more companies to offer NLD/STD services in India

DOT has approved 9 more service providers paving way for them to offer NLD/STD services. Those who got the green signal include, Shipping DOT com of the Essar group, HCL Infinet, Hughes Communications (India), Tulip IT Services, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam, Power Grid Corporation of India, RailTel Corporation of India, Oil India and i2i Enterprises.

It has been speculated that STD/NLD prices may start crashing from there. Earlier this week I reported about the price reduction by Reliance. The entry barriers with regards to fees has been much lower. They now pay just Rs2.5 Crores instead of Rs 100 crores as paid by operators earlier. Also they have furnished lesser bank guarantees. Not all of those who got approved will offer STD services directly to consumers. PSUs like Power Grid, RailTel and Oil India are expected to be B2B carriers.

Hutch and Tata Tele failed to get their applications approved as they didn’t comply with FIPB regulations.

Bharti launches Airtel Mega - Fixed Wireless Phone

Fixed Wireless Phone - A phone which is similar to your land phone but operates using Mobile Networks(GSM in case of Bharti). That means unlike your routine landline phone which requires wire till your home is not necessary in Fixed Wirless Phones. I am not sure if this kind of service is available elsewhere in the world but it is common in India. Fixed wireless phones offer the apability of SMS, Caller Tunes, Voice mail, etc.

Bhari-Airtel launched fixed wireless phone today. This phone came into existence mainly to service the rural areas in India which were left behind in the telecom revolution. Bharti announced that the service will be made available wherever Bharti’s Airtel Mobile works. Calls from Fixed Wireless Phones to Intra Circle cell phones will be atleast 50% cheaper.

At the launch of this Airtel Mega service, Sanjay Kapoor, Jt. President of Bharti-Airtel(Mobility Division) said that

The fixed landline market is India is currently under-served, specially in smaller town and villages, on account of inadequate infrastructure. With this, we will be able to target about 200 million households in the country. The FWP subscribers are likely to increase at 5 million per annum. This service will have all the facilities available to mobile users.

Mobile companies can’t operate on CDMA & GSM networks in the same circle

DOT (Department of Telecom, India) has clarified that mobile operators in India can hold only either of the two licenses - GSM or CDMA in any given cricle. This is a severe blow to Reliance Communication’s GSM expansion plans. DOT had earlier sought Reliance’s roadmap for GSM plan which the company hasn’t submitted yet. DOT has clarified that the entry of 5th GSM operator in any circle would be subject to availability of spectrum. DOT is also concerned about migrating Reliance’s huge customer base from CDMA to GSM. But why would DOT try to supress some technology ?

Insiders are speculating that Reliance is already looking at avenues to convert existing CDMA handsets to be compatible with GSM by means of a buy-back and or free talk time to compensate its customers.

Reliance Vs Qualcomm - Royalties, Spectrum, Network Independence, etc..

I would like to summarize the entire Convergence. In coverage on the issue involving Reliance, Tata, Qualcomm, GSM or CDMA and Spectrum.

It started in the first week of June when Anil Ambani’s Reliance Telecom applied for GSM license. Then I got an insight about Reliance’s call to switch to GSM - Mainly demanding Qualcomm for network independence and lower royalties. The costly CAPEX for its CDMA to migrate to CDMA2000(3G equivalent for CDMA). June 24th I reporetd that Qualcomm stock was severely beaten down as my insiders told me about possible downgrade as Reliance accounts for 8% of Qualcomm’s bottomline and also Nokia killed its CDMA handset plans.

Qualcomm CEO Jacobs in India. Jacobs and Tata’s talk fail, alleges spectrum policy was flawed and the war breaks out. IT Minister Maran and COAI clarify spectrum is not the issue. Reliance and Qualcomm have marathon meetings without any outcome. Reliance Communication’s sticks to its demands.

National Long Distance(NLD/STD) Wars breaks out in India

MTNL is planning to launch NLD/STD service between Mumbai and Delhi at the rate of Rs0.40/Minute(less than a cent). Reliance Communications, didn’t take long time to react and immediately announced that its fixed wireless phone customers can avail of similar benefit and call between any state capitals at the same rate as announced by MTNL. However, to avail this benefit, you have to have the phone in any of the state capital. That’s the spirit of free markets. Good job Reliance!

Also in a separate development, media companies close to inner circles of Ambanis have leaked that, Anil is not interested in various offers made by Paul Jacobs and is still pressing on royalty cuts. However, Reliance Communications, President, Shukla told that they will go with GSM & CDMA and leave the choice in the hands of consumers.
