Windows Vista - Requirements and Versions Review

Microsoft's Windows Vista will launch in Jan-2007. Here is an excellent review and requirements for a Windows Vista.

Though the pricing for stand alone version appears to be on the higher side, upgrade won't be expensive. The GUI is irresistible and reminds me of Apple MacBook.

Weekend Roundup - Broadband and Mobile India

A short week mainly because of Diwali and Eid extended holidays. Well, this Diwali we did see Nokia Corporation achieving a new global sales record for selling the highest number of phones on any given day - pre-Diwali. Nokia has also said that it will launch some of the Nokia N Series mobiles pre-loaded with movies. Guess news doesn't stop flowing for Nokia N Series; While American giants still think Music Player is the killer product, Indians have been embracing the N Series and Sony Ericsson 800 series phones.

With YouTube buy out by Google, the social networking space is getting hotter throughout and India is no exception. Yaari.com another clone of Facebook wants to compete with Orkut and the founders have their base in Stanford too. On the startup front we see that, VCs are also likely to chase social networking startups in India.

Have a Great Weekend!

Top 5 Digital Camera Gift Ideas for this Holiday Season

Here is a review of of Top 5 Digital Cameras to capture those splendid moments with family and friends this Holiday season.

Sony CyberShot DSC-T10
The Slim and Sexy Cybershot T10 is a 7.2 MegaPixel camera with 3x Optical Zoom. It is also equipped for video shooting at a resolution of 640*480 and 30FPS. Can also record sound and costs Rs 21,000. Its a truly marvellous camera from Sony.

Canon Powershot A640
PowerShot A640 is a great compact camera. It offers manual exposure controls (shutter speed, aperture size) and manual zoom control, which may not be the most convenient to use, but is still a great value-add. The A640 is definitely not the smallest or the sleekest of the compact cameras, but it sports an extremely useful tilt-n-swivel screen and gives results make that extra bulk worth it. A street price of Rs. 18,500 for a 10 megapixel makes it totally worth it.

Olympus µ 700
The all-weather Olympus µ (mju) 700, which is not only weatherproof, but also looks great. With a good 7.1 megapixel resolution under the hood, and an ultra compact dust/water/scratch resistant ultra-compact body outside, and a price tag of only Rs. 13,000 (retail price) the 700 makes a pretty good buy for all purposes.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50
Tthe Panasonic FZ50 may look like an SLR, but it does come pretty close. Cameras like the FZ50 are a bridge between manual and D-SLRs— a camera that boasts functions similar to an SLR, like manual focus, zoom, manual exposure, but comes with a single fixed lens.

With 10 megapixel native shooting resolution, a whopping 12x (35mm – 450mm) optical zoom and a tilt and swivel LCD screen, the FZ50 is a great choice for an amateur photographer looking for a camera with all the functionality and without the fuss of lens replacement and CCD noise. However, at a suggested retail price of Rs. 37,000 it looks bit expensive.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H1
The H1 is Sony's first foray into compact, big zoom image-stabilized cameras. As well as a huge 12x optical zoom the H1 is a real treasure chest of photographic control, offering a wealth of automatic, semi automatic and manual exposure modes, a big 2.5" screen and captures VGA/30fps movies in space-efficient MPEG format. Full photographic control with Real Imaging Processor & 14-bit DXP A/D Conversion and Optional wide and tele lens converters. Sugegsted retail price is Rs27,000 in Mumbai.

India gets Local on your BSNL Land Phone

Hats off to BUSHNELL. Four months ago BUSHNELL had launched India One plan for LandLines and it was a big flop. Thus, BSNL took a bold decision to make India a local corridor. Effective Nov-1st, Intra and Inter circle calls will now cost only Rs1.0/Minute. Your local call will cost Rs1.0 per 3 minutes. About 116 lakhs customers under this plan will get the benefits. Check out their press release for more information.

Nortel to conduct IPTV Trials

Canadian telecom, Nortel is planning to conduct IPTV trials in India. It has tied up with LG to manufacture its settop boxes.

The company plans to use the services and networks of Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd and Reliance Communications Limited. However, Bharti has been totally silent over its IPTV launch. Reliance Communications Limited with its 80,000Km dark fibreoptic network is in a fix whether to go for IPTV or Dish TV. IPTV is unlikely to gain a major market in the absence of cheap hardware and poor bandwidth at last mile (mere 256KBPs). In any case a subscriber wouldn't want to shell out Rs1,000-2,500 for high bandwidth connection and another Rs400 for TV channel subscription every month when Dish TV lets you enjoy all the comforts at mere Rs300 per month.

Incidentally, Infosys Chief Mentor, N R Naryana Murthy is a resident of JayaNagar too.

Hopefully Wi-Max will help broadband roll out faster in India.

1 Billion People and 1.5 Million Broadband Subscribers

India has a population of 1 Billion of which, just 1.5 Million have broadband connection,(According to Indian Government, Internet speed greater than 256 Kbps is broadband) not even 1% of its population. In contrast, the number of cellular phone subscribers has reached a whopping 10% of its population. In the chart above, (Reproduced with permission from goBroadband) we see that the state owned PSUs have a far greater lead over private service providers. Also the top 5 players command over 90% of the broadband market in India.

This implies that the government needs to do some serious thinking about this imbalance and put a favorable broadband policy before its too late. Send in your thoughts and suggestions to the TRAI.
