| Pink city-zens of Jaipur to surf on Wi-fi |
|
Last November, Bangalore became the first city in India to run wimax trials for citizens during BangaloreIt.In. Subsequently, Delhi announced the Connaught Place Wi-Fi project which was expected to go live on Jan-1st but is running late like the Indian Railways :-)
Just few weeks ago, Sify launched Wi-max for corporates in Mumbai and Bangalore. When I spoke to their marketing executive, he said that it was not viable for home consumers yet :-)
So it's promises everywhere but no fulfillment's yet. Today Rajasthan,CM, Vasundhara said that Jaipur would be Wi-fied in phases. When ? Nobody knows :-)Labels: wi-fi |

| BSNL- Business Broadband or Fraudband ? |
|
State owned BSNL operating directly under IT Minister, Mr. Dayanidhi Maran declared 2007 as they year of broadband and upgraded all consumers limited data transfer broadband connections to 2 Mbps. Unlimited data transfer broadband connections were left at 256 Kbps.
Its now time for BSNL to rip off Business broadband customers. BSNL just a while ago announced the availability of unlimited broadband for small businesses. The 256 Kbps and 512 Kbps unlimited data transfer connection costs whopping Rs 3,300 and Rs 6,000 / month respectively. Compare this with Tata Indicom's 512 Kbps unlimited broadband connection [Infinity 512] available for mere Rs 1,850 / month.
Is BSNL doing justice to Indian small businesses by pricing 3 times the cost of Tata Indicom ? |

| WiMax by You Telecom |
|
Citigroup Venture Capital promoted You Telecom is now planning to provide broadband services over WiMax. You Telecom's You Explore is in talks with Maxis owned, Aircel for the infrastructure.
Mr. Charvarthy of You Telecom said,
Initially, we will offer the services for the SME sector and later move on to enterprise and residential use. Earlier, we reported about Sify's WiMax launch. When contacted Sify's corporate office in Chennai, they said that it is initially targeting Corporate and SMEs. Entry cost for Home users would be way too high.
You Telecom is planning to offer Video Telephony but is hindered by the high cost of instruments which are currently pegged at Rs 17,000. Video Telephony never picked up amongst consumers. My guess is with deployment of 3G, one may then opt for video calls. However, 3G mobile handsets such as Nokia N70 and others are easily available at prices cheaper than Rs 17,000.
You Telecom claims that it currently has 140,000 broadband subscribers in 11 cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Vadodra and Visakhapatnam.Labels: Wimax |
