Online Gadget Retailers in India

Retail is not just the buzzword in unwired India, but also in Cyber India.

We have had online mobile retailers in India. But however, we were looking for various Gadget Retailers and in our study we have found that their are three companies in the business with similar brand identities.

The first to come into operations is Gadgets.In. This company is based out of Delhi and have been in online retailing business for nearly 20 months. They also sell on eBay, Rediff and Indiatimes.

Another online retailer surfaced from Mumbai - GadgetsGuru.in They are aggressively advertising online and have no eBay or other presence. They claim that they are the first online Technology Mall in India, but that claim doesn't sound to be True.

Just a while ago, we learnt about another Gadget Retailer going online. This company is based out of Gurgaon and have very similar brand - CafeGadgets.in. Why do Indians always like to copy and can't build an individual identity and a world class brand ?

Reliance Retail E-commerce Plans

Celebrating his 50th Birthday today with the King of Bollywood, Reliance Retail Chairman, Mukesh Ambani announced e-commerce plans. We all know when Mukesh says something he is damn serious about it.

Reliance Retail plans to launch an e-commerce portal and setup delivery points in the city to Pick-Up or Deliver goods. They expect at least 6% of the sales to happen via their website when launched. The e-commerce business will thrive on a two-pronged strategy, B2B as well as B2C. It will also help the company strengthen its logistics network

However, their are a few issues in the B2C this model. Credit Card in India is poorly penetrated and Reliance Retail plans to launch a Credit Card well designed for the Aam Adami.

Localized Domains and Search on Pilot Basis

Not just the content on your website, but NIXI wants domains in localized languages as well. This means the .In domains names that link to the Vernacular content will also have a Vernacular name :-) Really ? Yes That's what NIXI and and C-DAC are testing on a pilot basis.

IT Ministry offcials said,
While there are websites with Indian language content, one is yet to see a web address in Hindi. We are working on a mechanism to enable a user to have his domain name in the language of his choice.
Looks like someone in the Indian IT Ministry is deeply influenced by the success of Chinese local Internet Model. They are also working on building a software that will act as a search engine seamlessly running across all the prominent Indian language scripts. Are Google and Yahoo! listening ?

BharatMatrimony Success Stories a Lie

BharatMatrimony.Com had claimed in a national newspaper that it had 8 times more success stories than its nearest rival [Obvious reference to Shaadi.com]. Shaadi.Com contested Bharat Matrimony's claim in the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission[MRTPC] where the ruling was in favor of Shaadi.Com.

The ruling said,
Petitioner has made a prima facie case that the claim made by respondent… is false and misrepresenting and disparaging to complainant.
Hopefully the true numbers will come out or in fine print they would have a sample period where they may have really beaten Shaadi.com but by 8 times is a number hard to digest.

Yahoo! Maps - A hasty launch ?

Yahoo! India announced the launch of Maps Beta. Wait a Minute, if you have ever used Google Maps in the US, then you can skip reading the next part as Yahoo! India maps needs a lot of work.

I tried testing the service since they have launched it for polluted Bangalore / Bengalooru City. I tried finding 5th Block of Jaynagar by various queries but the system was not able to find it. But you can see Block 5 right there in the map which I located by scrolling manually. Their is some useful information such as Hospitals, Shopping Complex, ATM etc. I expect Yahoo! or other Maps provider to integrate Yellow Pages very soon.

IMHO, it is a hasty launch on behalf of Yahoo!. I find Google Earth much more tempting to use.

BSNL MultiPlay IPTV in Pre-paid and Post-Paid segments

Last month, goBroadband reported about the launch of BSNL's MultiService - IPTV in Pune. It is reliably learnt that BSNL will roll out this service in different cities by Mid-2007 and hopes to end the year with 300,000 subscribers.

BSNL is negotiating with various TV channels and content providers. BSNL officials have hinted that the service will be available in pre-paid and post-paid segment. The operator hopes to generate a new revenue source, as the growth of its fixed-line revenues remains stagnant and are under increasing threat from private telecom players who are planning to make local calls FREE.

If you have had a chance to witness IPTV services by either MTNL in Mumbai or Delhi or BSNL in Pune, kindly share your thoughts in the comment or leave your e-mail, i'll contact you.

Online Book Sales - Hotel Reservations Increase

Indians are increasingly becoming Net Savvy even with poor Internet penetration in India. In a recent study, it is found that Indians are purchasing books, travel tickets and hotel reservations online.

According to Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India’s (FHRAI) hotel industry survey, the percentage of hotels (only branded category / hotel chains) using websites as distribution channel for selling rooms increased from 33.2% in 2005 to 77.3% in 2006.

In another study, Oxford Bookstore reports that, its online sales are almost doubling YoY. eBay India sells a book every 18 minutes. IndiaPlaza and FirstandSecond have also witnessed similar trends.

It definitely makes sense to BUY books, tickets and hotel reservations online because of the pathetic state of city Infrastructure [Parking /Traffic / Pollution etc].
