| Interactive Avenues - Lack of Online Metrics |
|
Mr. Ratish Nair, CEO of Interactive Avenues a year old online Advertising startup, expressed his displeasure over lack of metrics to promote online advertising. He is concerned about varying figures of Internet numbers in India 12 Million to 52 Million and asks who is right ? According to TRAI, at the end of 2006, India had 8.6 Million Internet Subscribers[PDF]. Users will far outnumber subscribers as we still see lot of cybercafes in business along with few hundred thousand Indians accessing the web at work place.
Mr. Nair asks - How many finance/business sites can a media planner name ? You need not worry how many sites of blogs exist on Indian Finance. Just get used to Google's AdWords platform and they will target your Ads to the right audience. Gone are the days of having just handful of web properties for information. Online Advertising is all about Technology and no more the lobby of Advertisers and Marketing folks. Thanks to Salar Kamangar, a Biological Science major @ Stanford who defined and launched the Most Innovative Online Advertising Platform - AdWords. Google has also introduced Placement Reports for Advertisers to have greater control on their spend with tons of reports and metrics for future campaigns.
Mr. Nair does raise some valid questions about the reach and lack of metrics companies such as comScore. A closer study on Indian Internet Advertising exists from Pinstorm. |

| Is it time to shut down Naukri.Com ? |
|
The Photo on your left is of a lesser known personality, Mahendra Swarup, who is truly pragmatic in his approach, especially on Broadband and Internet in India.
He was the former head of Times Internet and laid the foundation stone for Web 2.0 in Times with his O2 initiative.
In an exclusive interview he said,
When you have 100,000 people connected through a network, there's no reason why they should not enter into an economic relationship. For example, I don't see any need for jobs portals in the future. His interview is a must read for Web 2.0 and Internet Entrepreneurs. |

| BSNL Data Card for Wireless Internet |
|
State owned BSNL which is trying hard to retain existing customer base in Mobile and Landline verticals just a while ago announced that it will focus on Data services as well.
Tata's controlled VSNL last week announced that Data Service will be a core competency and it expects significant part of its revenue to come from Data services for which VSNL is willing to expand into tier-II cities of India.
BSNL has gone an extra mile by announcing that it wants to bundle EDGE/GPRS PC Data Card with its cellular mobile connections and has sought offers from companies[PC and Laptop Retailers] willing to offer this. BSNL is a late entrant into the segment as Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel already have tie-ups with PC retailers. GSM service providers are at an advantage because they can offer International roaming which may not be necessary because of the presence of local Wi-Fi Hotspots in many countries.
BSNL will also provide Wireless internet over its CDMA network using NIC or EVDO Card. I honestly don't understand what kind of service consumers get from a government owned agency which is very laid back. |

| Mobile Internet Users Double. Fourth in World |
|
Indians going online using their Mobile Phone has more than doubled in the past one year according to a release by PTI. Be it using your Airtel Data Card or Reliance Discover Internet card. One in every 11 people logging on the www across the world is an Indian.
Indians account for 9% of the total number of mobile Internet users in the world. Compare this with broadband, where India lags severely behind, maybe less than 1% :( According to a study by UK based form Bango, it expects mobile phone usage in India to exceed European levels in the next few years.
With pathetic broadband penetration in India, Bango expects that wherever flat-rate mobile data charges are pervasive in a country, then there's much more web browsing. However, with the launch of Reliance Broadband over Wimax in Bangalore, the scenario might be totally different few years from now, say "India will be the fourth in number of broadband users over Wimax". |

| Google or Yahoo to Host Government Search |
|
The ambitions of IT Ministry are dying with the stepping down of Dayanidhi Maran. They had earlier planned to develop a Vernacular Search Engine but with recent developments looks like they just want Yahoo! or Google to help them.
National Informatics Center, the backbone of Indian Government's IT and also the .In domain name system is in talks with Yahoo! and Google seeking help to search more than 5,000 government sites and intranet servers. Currently NIC is being powered by Netscape Search.
In another development, TRAI has put an additional burden on NIC to Develop and Maintain the National Do Not Call Registry of India. |
