| Tata Indicom WiMax Up and Running in Bangalore |
|
Wi-Fi hasn't lived to the hype that it generated in India with literally no operational citywide networks. However, WiMax is seeing increased adoption. After Reliance, Tata Communications [VSNL] has launched Indicom broadband powered by WiMax technology in Bangalore.
We all know that VSNL is the pioneer of Internet in India yet it faced serious setbacks lately, due to poor over head cable connections, etc. [Getting to the bottom of the problem, we found out VSNL Cable Internet was in association with local Cable guys. Due to competition amongst Cable guys, muscle power and unethical practices including cable cuts were common] With Tata brand name under pressure, they decided to go broadband with WiMax technology. Unlike Reliance which launched in a hurry, Tata Communications seem to have tested for atleast 60 days here in Bangalore.
Tata Communications Wimax broadband should be available in any corner of Bangalore because they have kicked off with 140 WiMax Towers, a terrific number. Did you know that the service provider installs a WiMax antenna costing approximately Rs 10,000 for FREE and takes it back if you discontinue the service. So this implies no more breaking head with city corporations for right of way to lay cables as BSNl has setup its DSL backed broadband network.
The rates are competitive and are comparable to Airtel Broadband. The only thing we now need to see is the performance :-) |

| 2007 - Year of Jokes from BSNL + Economic Times |
|
After Satyam Infoway its BSNL Broadband in the high spirits of announcements without any substance. Officials at BSNL Kolkata claim that they will deploy 500 Mbps [yes don't pinch yourself, its 500 Mbps] optical fiber broadband networks in Kolkata. Probably this will be the fastest broadband network in any city in the world.
The ET writer says,
The 100 mbps project will allow users to make his/her entire house a local area network on which all gadgets like TV, refrigerator, washing machine, micro-wave, gizzard, water filter or the lock at the main door and the gate will be connected. All these can be controlled remotely through a wireless gadget like the cell phone or any other handheld devices. What I don't understand is why does one need 100Mbps to drive home appliances ? According to Embedded Systems Control, few bits are enough to make them functional :-) After connecting all those home appliances on a 100 Mbps network, the Economic Times reporter will use his cell phone [probably on GSM network] to control them :-)
Oops! wait a minute, the reporter has just done his job, reporting It is actually the CGM BSNL Kolkata, S K Chakravarti who said,
These kind of applications require at least 100mbps speeds, termed FTTP (fibre to the premises). Once this speed is achieved a few additional instruments at the users end will enable wireless gadgets to control almost all electronic and electrical devises from remote locations. I think the BSNL official was in a light mood to joke and the ET reporter took it seriously, came back to office and made a big story LOL :-) Alas, 2007 is ending as a Year of Jokes instead of the Year of Broadband for DoT & BSNL. |

| Internet user base now at 46 Million |
|
According to a recent survey by IAMAI and IMRB, the Internet user base in India which includes users accessing the Internet from Home, Office, Cyber Cafe etc now stands at 46 million i.e 4.5% of India :-)
However, the active number of users is estimated to be mere 32 million, 3.1% of India. Consider this with 21% mobile subscribers in India. Also the number of broadband subscribers in India stands at mere 2.69 million subscribers.
The survey was conducted across several cities in India on a sample size of 65,000 users. |
