Bharti Airtel's Website Down with Internal Server Error

India's largest Mobile Service Provider as well as the largest private Internet Service provider is unable to get the facts right about hosting its website [Airtel.in]. We have noticed errors in the past and today, when the President of the company is announcing its results and addressing a Conference Call, the site is down. Check out the screen-shot below.
Bharti Airtel Website is Misconfigured to Web surfersIn 2006, the Developers of the site had exposed source code of several sections to casual web surfers. What about folks who want to pay their Airtel bills online ? I just don't see the login interface anywhere.

Update on 25th @ 1:30 AM: The site is up and running but one can only see the Q1FY09 results. Information about Mobile and Telecom services from the site are missing. We had thought Bharti Airtel was one of the best companies, guess we are a little wrong about it :-)

BSNL Bangalore Targets 300K Landline Connections

At a time when Landline connections across the country is seeing a dip, BSNL in Bangalore is bucking the trend. BSNL actually saw an increase of 5% in the number of land line connections provided last year - Most of the demand is due to broadband services. BSNl plans to add 300K Land line connections this year and achieve a growth of 8% over last year. This is despite 3,000 connections being surrendered every month.

Shubhendu Ghosh, GM BSNL Bangalore said,
Most customers still want a landline and that si where they prefer BSNL over other operators. While there is a good percentage still surrendering their phones, the necessity of having a landline to enable broadband on it is spurring the demand.
With the construction boom in Bengaluru, BSNL has tied up with various developers to offer broadband ready homes to Geeky Bangaloreans. BSNL lays an Optical cable until the Apartment complex which terminate into a mini exchange. From this mini exchange to your Apartment a copper cable is drawn which makes your home plug-n-play :-)

BSNL's IPTV in Bangalore has few takers due to the low number of channels [60] the company is offering. Do let us know about your experience with BSNL in getting a broadband connection as we couldn't get one 12-15 months ago.

High WiMax Spectrum Price - Why should ISPs Care ?

It is reliably learnt from sources in the DoT that reserve price for 3G Spectrum auction is likely to be around Rs 2,260 crore for a PAN India license. Additionally, DoT is tying WiMax spectrum auction to 3G and has set a reserve price of fourth of the 3G reserve price i.e ~Rs 550 crore.

Independent ISPs complain that they cannot compete with deep pocket telcos in the auction who have multiple streams of revenue. These ISPs have written to the TRAI seeking intervention and asking it to recommend reserved slots for a separate auction thus preserving competition in the market.

However, going by the Government's moves of not opening BSNL's last mile network to other operators nor extending concessions for laying wired telephone network makes us skeptical on Government's policy on broadband. Recall it has already made to shut some ISPs which was not really necessary.

Hey! small and independent ISPs, don't be so desperate about Wimax Broadband Spectrum as Wimax 1.0 is a Box Office flop in India.
