| B2B BandWidth Cost To Rise ? |
|
The frequent International Bandwidth cable cuts has given a new business opportunity for Indian Telcos to serve the BPO, IT and ITeS community. Most of these companies use Leased line connectivity for their business needs. Depending upon their ISP, some companies have been affected even though India's NIXI has provisions for emergency routing through alternative channels, but rivalry between Big Telcos to push for new products like "Uninterrupted Leased Lines" has pushed some telcos like Reliance Communications into the corner.
ISPs have started pitching that if Corporates want highly secure and reliable connectivity despite incidents ofcable cuts, then they need to shell out more. ISPs and bandwidth carriers are making a business case saying they will BUY channels on different route so that in times of emergency they can use the best available network.
In case of SMW3 and SMW4, their are restoration contracts, meaning one will act as a fallback reserve ot the other. However, this time near France both they systems have been impacted at the same time.
Did you know that a 256 kbps leased Line will cost you approximately 50 times more than your ADSL broadband connection ? So stay happy while you read and surf at minuscle cost using your DSL internet :-) |

| Subscriber Numbers by State + Geography |
|
We have obtained the broadband subscribers numbers sorted state wise. Maharashtra topped the list with 9.34 lakh broadband subscribers, bulk of the subscribers coming from Mumbai. Here is the complete list - State - Subscribers in lakh
- Maharashtra & Goa - 9.34
- Tamilnadu - 6.44
- Delhi including NCR - 5.88
- Karnataka - 5.69
- Andhra Pradesh - 4.00
- Gujarat - 3.22
- Kerala - 2.49
- West Bengal - 2.46
- Uttar Pradesh - 2.38
- Punjab - 1.82
- Madhya Pradesh - 1.68
- Rajasthan - 1.45
If you are a startup focused on India, the above numbers will give you a fair approximation for geographic targeting, for example say if you want to localize your website in Indian language then you might first want to start with Marathi where bulk of the broadband subscribers reside. |

| Corporates say no to WiMax / 3G Internet |
|
Big consumers of the fat Pipes in India, the Corporate world is unwilling to migrate to WiMax or 3G according to a survey published in the Dec issue of Voice & Data . The survey included 156 companies across various industrial verticals - Manufacturing, BFSI, Retail and IT/ITeS.
85% of all respondents still prefer Wired high bandwidth connections. 93% of the IT/ITeS companies voted for Wireline broadband. The results were similar when asked about their excitement about 3G. 87% not in favor of 3G for corporate use. Apart from pure Internet access other popularly deployd applications in the Indian market are Corp. Intranet and Voice / Video / Multimedia streaming.
Airtel Broadband and Tata VSNL together own ~50% of the corporate internet access market and both had an overall pre and post implementation score of 93 [on a scale of 100] considering issues like Network Design, Solutions Fit Assessment etc. BSNL ranked the worst with a score of 83.
Poor implementations of Wimax by Tata and Reliance for consumers maybe one of the reasons why corporates don't want to give a shot for Wireless Internet yet. However, it is very likely that they will provide their employees with 3G broadband access to carry business on the move. |
