Android has still facing version differentiation. A lot of v2.1 devices are not upgraded to v2.2.
Most new phones are still shipped with v2.3 instead of v4.0.
Google put a real smart foot in the world of Smartphones. They bought Linux Based Android in 2005 and made it the Mobile OS abandoning Chrome effort.
They have standardized Android Mobile OS and thus lack of differentiation among Android handset makers is very apparent. Handset makers will obviously try to run faster in an effort to outgrow the industry, but the reality is that hardware has become a commodity. Android 4.0 unifies the user experience and what’s left for the vendors is to compete on price. Android 4.0 for the first time introduced Data Monitoring tools for the user.
Google's strategy will let Telecom Service Providers take the path of skipping the branded products and working directly with the ODMs to make Service Provider branded Android phones [for example Idea Cellular Android Blade Phones]. I think this trend may make it even more difficult for handset makers to extract significant value from increases in features and specs.
In 2011, Google Bought Motorola's Mobile Division to protect Android Phone manufacturers from potential law suits. Thus Google is pushing Android in all angles :-) What say ?
