BSNL 3G Data Card + Plans for Internet Access

By Webmaster - Last updated: Monday, February 23, 2009 - 88 Comments

We have collected details about accessing the Internet using High speed BSNL 3G Network in Chennai. BSNL will expand the same service and network to other circles and at the same Tariffs.

BSNL Broadband using 3G Network:
Users shall be able to access Web using High speed broadband connection. BSNL talks of 2 Mbps but we will be happy to receive at least 1 Mbps uninterrupted data transfer.

Users have the choice to connect using USB Stick Interface or PCMCIA Card which will be provided by BSNL. Available choices are Merlin X950D Express Card, Merlin XU870 Express Card, Option Globe Trotter Express 7.2, Option Globe Trotter Express HSUPA 3G data card and Sierra Wireless Air Card 880E.

Tariffs for BSNL Broadband 3G Data Plans:
Trial Pack – 50 MB Rs 60 and 100 MB will cost Rs 120 with 15 days Validity.

BSNL 3G Broadband Plans with Limited Usage:
The following plans have validity of 30 days. Additional download will be charged at Rs 2 / MB.
For Rs 250 you will get 300 MB Free Download, Rs 400 will fetch you 1 GB of Free Download, Rs 650 will get you 2 GB of Free Download while Rs 1,000 will get you 5 GB of Download. Service taxes are Extra.

BSNL 3G Broadband Plan with Unlimited Usage:
This will cost you Rs 3,000 / month with unlimited data transfer. Compare this to Airtel’s 1 Mbps DSL Unlimited data transfer plan available at Rs 2,222. BSNL is currently enjoying the monopoly and eventually when other operators enter the market, BSNL will be the first one to reduce the tariff as it has been pretty customer friendly.

Now if you are our reader in Chennai or other Metros where BSNL / MTNL 3G Data Plans are launched, we request you to check the Broadband Speed here and kindly notify us by means of a comment.

BSNL and other ISPs should launch a special plan for students….. at least at the time of connection some concession should be availed for students. Out of 100% till now only say roughly less than 10% are using data card. This 10% include those people with good money background. So far I have learned that most of the people don't consider it as a wise decision to go for data card because of its pocket pinching plans.
ISP's in India should keep in mind that India is a country where most of the people belong to middle class, and also that out of 100% say appox 80%-90% of the people using internet are from Student Sector.

Hi,
can we opt for a 3g data plan and use the SIM on a 3g enabled phone? And use it to connect my laptop through USB?

Comment from Srikantha
Time May 2, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Hi Madhu,

YES, its possible to connect any 3G phone with BSNL 3G SIM via USB Cable/ Bluetooth to the Laptop/Desktop. You will be charged 1Rs/1 MB. The speed is comparitively better when compared to airtel’s mobile office which also offers desktop internet via mobile phone, but BSNL 3G’s speed is far less compared to wired broadband service. I can get download speeds upto 45Kbps while i was using wired broadband i used to get upto 120Kbps. And its worth if used less frequently. But its way too costly if used against wired connection.

This is what you have to do, to connect ur cell to pc/laptop.

i) Connect 3G Mobile to pc/laptop via usb cable or bluetooth.
ii) This should automatically install usb modem/bluetooth modem if proper pc suite is already installed.
iii) then go to connection settings in the pc suite and configure the settings as below,

access point : gprssouth.cellone.in
user name: +91
password: +91

connect and start surfing :)
Hope this info is useful

I bought a 3G sim card from chennai and i am staying in Adyar. I have to go to the terrace to catch the 3G signal. Else it would go back to the 2G signal.

I dont think that BSNL has deployed 3G sigal around anywhere(even in metros) perfectly.

Before buying the 3G datacard please do check the 3G signal availability in your area.

EDGE (2.5G), UMTS (3G), HSDPA (3.5G), HSUPA (3.75G)

So you can check the device and the offered service with the above specifications

The complaint of disconnecting of 3G datacard is only for prepaid connections. It was there but it was attended.3G is a new born baby and the defects can be set right only by your valuable comments. Now prepaid datacard is working without any disconnection and good speed. If anything is there, pl.contact your local BSNL IMPCS people to contact Coimbatore IMPCS to solve this type of problem.

I live in Chennai and was using Airtel Broadband for more that 5yr. I never faced any issues.
My Last Airtel plan was 4Mbps where is used to get actual download speed of 2.8Mbps and above.

I had to shift my house to Gopalapuram, were Airtel ports are full and the only option was
BSNL DSL. I got connected in 4 days time. I have selected 4Mbps plan (Rs. 1400) However the
actual speed is just 256 to 300 Kbps. They are not bothered to fix the issue till date.

I am using a 3G Mobile connection from BSNL for quite some time on Nokia 5800. I use that mobile
only to sign in to gtalk, yahoo ,facebook, twitter and e-mail (on-mobile). I use Airtel sim on different phone for voice.

To my surprise when I connected the 3G phone to my laptop the speed was great. Far better than
Reliance and tata data card. I get a speed of 1Mbps to 3Mbps (depends on signal) when connection from my phone.

Its a 3GB prepaid SIM card. I have recharged it with Rs.601 for 1GB day and 5GB night usage.

BSNL 3G service seems to be fast good in wireless connectivity than going for broadband for a family or students owning PC.

But unlimited data transfer prices are very high,BSNL 3G would get more customer if the prices are reduced at a reasonable tariffs for unlimited data transfer.

Only for sometimes I m getting one point tower (in guduvancherry)and all the time there is no network coverage. BSNL 3G data card is THE WORST

I am from Nagpur. I bought this BSNL 3G data card a month ago with unlimited plan. When I saw demo I got impressed with the speed, closed other 2 connections and purchased this. I don’t remember a day when it didn’t disconnected within 10 to 15 mins and every now and then since 4-5 days. Its not that I live in interior parts where there may be chance of week signals. I tested on various machines also but the same.
I am a freelance web developer and can’t do without internet. BSNL 3G has ruined my business. I am losing money and clients like anything. There is no one to hear with this people. No one picks up the call at customer support number and no one takes any action you give any written complaints.

Guys stay away from this BSNL 3G data card otherwise you will just be helpless and pulling your hairs and go bald soon. This people are fooling us by selling useless products. I am posting this message on as many blogs as I can so as I can prevent some people form getting cheated by these people.

Hi All,
I am from Bangalore and stay near Majestic area. I too bought a BSNL 3G with a
data card after Diwali. The signal strength in my area is almost 98-100%.
Considering this, I get an average speed of 1.5 – 2 Mbps.
The maximum file download speed which I observed while downloading a file form Oracle website was 756 KBps. Remember its KBps and not Kbps, so its a caps ’B’.
So that was truly amazing. Therefore the maximum download speed I noticed was 4.5 Mbps and an average of 2 Mbps most of the time.
The least speed observed in the same site was 120-140 KBps with a slight fluctuation.
Torrent downloads with 4 file simultaneously, the total bandwith for download nearly reached 390-400 KBps, and upload was 1-1.5 Mbps.

This is truly amazing provided u have sufficient signal in ur respective areas.

One query please.
Am using Huawei data card, model no e1752, which I purchased for Rs 3800/= Is this the correct price? Or have I paid more for this ?

I heard the prices for the same Huawei model in e-Bay, Alibaba etc are being sold for Rs . 2800-3000/- . Is it fine to buy goods from these sites…?
Can they be genuine and can we rely on them…?
Anybody having some knowledge about this, please reply and share their experiences.
Any body who knows about this or who want to know anything about BSNL’s 3G experience can drop me a mail to mohammedbit@gmail.com

Thanks,

Hi
My family lives in Ankleshwar(Gujarat).I have purchased 3G dongle for internet before I came to US for my family. I would like to chat with them using Skype. Let me tell you that they (my family) have been trying to connect internet for last one month but it gets unplugged with in 5 to 10 minutes. It may work if we have laptop so we can go where network is. Very funny BSNL!!!
DO not buy useless so called 3G service from BSNL if you are in Ankleshwar and plan to use it in your home desktop PC.

Hi,
I purchased BSNL 3G in Nov-2010 – Terracom USB Stick.

There are serious performance issues with this service. I also do have a Tata VSNL Broadband connection. I did some test using “tracert” command available in windows.

The result is that It takes considerable time even to establish a connection with the nearest tower. where as it is is 25ms with vsnl. Presently It might work for a few minutes and simply stops working. This service is useless for any serious work such online trading etc.

I use a reliance-data card and had similar issues. u need to disable the antivirus on ur system. works without disruption. the service has its own antivirus so swithing-off the antivirus is safe.

Will you please let the public know how to activate GPRS 3G plan in 3G Prepaid Card ( not data card )? Your customer care told me to send message “DATA601″ TO 53733 TO GET 3GB DATA FOR 3 MONTHS IN A 3G PREPAID CARD ( NOT DATA CARD ). If this is correct why not you make the public know this? I was also told to send message “DATA252″ to get one month validity 1GB data to 53733. But this information is not available in your website. How do you expect public to avail your services without letting them know how to avail such service?
