The Government’s Policies for enhancement of Broadband are Pathetic and thus we end the year 2012 with mere 15 to 15.2 Mn Broadband Customers in India [14.81 Mn Until October-2012]. However, private companies and entrepreneurs are not deterred and are trying hard to Wire India on to the Internet. ADSL is the most popular means of broadband followed by Cable and of-course EVDO and 3G Dongles in the Wireless segment. FTTH which can Provide the Most Speed in Wired Broadband and 4G LTE in Wireless are still in nascent stages of deployment. We’d like to enlighten our readers about FTTH and VDSL in this Article.
What is a FTTH Broadband Connection ?
FTTH is a Fiber to the Home and uses passive optical networking (PON) technology that delivers dedicated capacity to be split across a certain amount of users. Compared to other technologies, that bandwidth budget is much larger and allows for faster consumer speeds. Advanced version of PON is the GPON (gigabit passive optical networking), the latest variant, which can deliver 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream split amongst as many of 64 end users. The following figure shows the Typical fiber to the home – FTTH network architecture. BSNL / MTNL is the Only Service Provider in India offering FTTH. Airtel and Reliance Broadband also offers FTTH in few selected pockets of certain cities. Read the rest of this entry »
As we bid adieu to 2012, it’s almost 2 years that 3g started rolling out in India. Despite significant price correction of nearly 70%, 3G Data rates yet hover above at an average 2.5 times of 2G GPRS Data packages. This indicates that there is room for further price cuts in 3G services. The key differentiating factor between 2G and 3G is speed implying consumer’s data usage is not depended on 3G technology. While high bandwidth data usage is inconvenient on 2G, 2.5x rates differentials between 2G and 3G are too high to capture data users on 3G and monetise high asset creation in 3G.
Globally 3G penetration has been led by low price arbitration between 2G and 3G. Until data prices are aligned for both technologies, operators will find it difficult to expand 3G services at a mass level. Indian Telecom operators on the contrary are signalling increase in 2G rates to align it with 3G rates. We believe the low data penetration rates will force companies to keep data rates low for a long period to enhance subscriber base.
Coverage of 3G in India vs 2G
As evident from the Chart above, with nearly 2 years from commencement of 3G operations, telecom operators have about 16%-17% of network coverage vs 2G network, which implies that there is vast unutilized network Read the rest of this entry »

What is Line Bonding ?
Line bonding is a process in which two broadband connections are taken and made them to work as one, so the Broadband Speed is doubled at the users end. For Example, if a user is receiving 4 Mbps download speed, with line bonding they can expect to receive 8 Mbpswhich is similar to fibre / FTTH broadband .
Why is Line Bonding Done ?
Some users are bandwidth guzzlers and want to merge two separate ADSL lines to get double the speed. They started doing so using a Router like ZyXel ADSL2+ Bonded 4-port Router which can support ADSL2+ connections. Thus to satiate such users, MTNL itself is doing so at the Exchange end (DSLAM).

NPD Group research has revealed that 45% of viewers in the US use Internet connected HDTV sets more frequently compared to personal computers to view premium as well as free streaming content from the Internet.
In the new era of hyper-competitive Web and Communications, companies are battling to deliver their service offerings across multiple devices in order to derive multiple revenue streams. They do that by delivering a commonality of services across multiple technology platforms and their related devices. So is Smart TV the first stop in the Convergence era ?
Technology has began to overlap from various corners with intense competition in features and functionality. The value proposition becomes blurred and the value begins to migrate faster and deeper into the silicon (semiconductor IC chips) rather than the devices. The semiconductor chips within TVs begin with IP Connectivity and now are ready to take on the strong>graphics and processing capabilities that are required to run everything from streaming video to HTML5 browsers, casual games and eventually high-end native games. The value proposition for network operators that are today building out Internet Protocol (IP) based converged networks to leverage both over-the-top and even user generated applications.
The popularity of PCs has come down to 31% from 48% in 2011 for watching streaming content. The change in customer preference can be attributed to higher penetration of Smart TVs as NPD data reveals that about 10% of US families own at least one Smart TV which is capable of accessing content and apps such as Hulu Plus(12%) or Netflix(40%) Read the rest of this entry »
